I want to custom my winter camp debut! Review of the 5th APECTY full tongue knife!

I want to custom my winter camp debut! Review of the 5th APECTY full tongue knife!, Shieldon

At the camp last week, I felt “I need a tough knife!”, So I searched Amazon for the best knife and bought it. This week, I will give you a review of the knives I bought and how they feel after sharpening the knives with a whetstone as a beginner. If you are interested in knives but have never used them, please check them out!

I felt the need for a full tongue knife

In last week’s serialization, I visited the EDC knife Camping Ground and challenged the bonfire. I had a hard time igniting the firewood I bought, so I realized the need for a knife and ax. I wanted to buy an ax and a knife at the same time, but first I would like to introduce the impression that I bought a sheath knife and used it at home.

Review using out of the box

Sheath knives are available in a wide variety from all EDC knife brands. The conditions for the knife I was looking for are:

Blade length is 10 cm or less

There are large sheath knives that can also be used like machetes. It’s reliable for the main use of debranching and batoning, but I plan to purchase an ax specializing in chopping wood after the knife. Therefore, I limited my search to knives of 10 cm or less, which are not too long and easy to use for cooking.

Light and easy to use

For knives, lightness and durability are not simply proportional. The most relevant to durability is the structure of the knife. Even though it is lightweight, the sheath knife with the blade on the handle is durable and can easily chop wood. I don’t intend to carry it with me during the solo camp, but I chose a lightweight knife that weighs less than 200g and doesn’t get in the way.

Made of stainless steel

There are mainly two types of knife materials, stainless steel and carbon. The features of each are as follows.

Difference between stainless steel and carbon

Stainless steel: Easy to maintain, inferior to carbon

Carbon: Sharp, easy to chip and rust

Each material has its advantages and disadvantages. For me, edc knives are something I carry around on a daily basis, so I chose stainless steel so that I don’t have to worry about rusting if I clean it.

The selected knife is APECTY “Full tongue knife”

The type with a blade length of 9 cm sold by APECTY fits the requirements of the sheath knife I was looking for. First of all, I will introduce the basic specifications.

APECTY “Full tongue blade length 9 cm”

Overall length of knife: Approximately 20 cm

Blade length: Approximately 9 cm

Blade width: Approximately 2 cm

Blade thickness: Approximately 3 mm

Knife weight: Approximately 90g

Gross weight: Approximately 150g

Impressions of holding a knife out of the box

At first, I tried to use it as it was without sharpening. The first impression is “light and easy to grip”. The shape of the grip is designed to fit your hand, so you can hold the knife in a stable manner. This is important for safe batoning and bushcraft.

The sheath is also excellent!

The sheath that stores the blade when the knife is not in use is also equipped with double measures to prevent it from coming off, so you can carry it with confidence. The first stage is locked to the sheath body, and the second stage is a snap button type belt lock. It is designed so that it will not fall even if the blade comes off, so you can carry it with confidence.

Buttoning

I tried to baton the firewood that was actually left at home. Unfortunately, only firewood with knots remained, but if you hit the back of the blade up to the part without knots, it will bite into the Swiss firewood. Once I reached the knotted part, I pulled out the pocket knife and buttoned again from the other side to deal with it. There is no damage to the knife and it can be used robustly.

Bushcraft

I also tried Bushcraft with my son. It’s my first time, so I’m not good at it, but the work itself is not difficult. I will be able to raise my arms and tell you how to make it easily.

Can be used firmly even out of the box!

As a general impression that I used it at home, it has enough performance to be used even if it is out of the box and brought to the field. It doesn’t cut surprisingly as it is. However, it has sharpness and functionality that can be used without problems for batoning and small cooking.

I sharpened it because it was a big deal!

I only have a diamond sharpener at home, so I bought a whetstone at the same time as the knife. Here is the whetstone I purchased.

This whetstone is a set recommended for beginners who have an all-in-one pedestal, non-slip rubber, and 4 types of counts.

The smaller the number, the rougher the grindstone count, the rough grindstone up to 600, the medium grindstone up to 600-2,000, and the finish grindstone higher than that. Keep in mind that the rough whetstone has the role of repairing the blade when it is chipped, the medium whetstone has the role of daily maintenance, and the finishing whetstone has the role of making the blade shine beautifully and finishing it with a sharp sharpness.

How to sharpen a knife

Soak the grindstone in water for about 30 minutes before sharpening the knife. By immersing it in water, the water penetrates into the small holes in the grindstone, which helps to custom the knife slippery when sharpening. It also has the effect of suppressing the frictional heat generated when sharpening the knife, so be sure to do it.

This time, I sharpened the grindstone in the order of 600, 1,500, and 5,000. When sharpening, lay the knife on the grindstone once. Hold the blade from there and try to find an angle that will stop naturally.

Also, since it is not possible to sharpen the whole at once, the trick is to sharpen the tip, middle, and root separately. First, sharpen one side, but be sure to use the whetstone evenly. If you use only a part of the grindstone, only that part will be worn out and you will not be able to sharpen it correctly.

Whether or not the knife has been sharpened is marked by the appearance of burrs with a rough feel when touched from the opposite side of the sharpened surface. Since the knife can only be sharpened on the part where the finger is attached, sharpen the knife, touch it from the opposite side to check that burrs are coming out, change the sharpening location, and repeat the same on the other side.

After sharpening both sides, lightly touch the entire knife to the grindstone and remove the burrs on the knife to draw a circle, and the blade sharpening is complete.

Change the number from a small grindstone to a large grindstone, but repeat the same procedure. Finally, wash the knife thoroughly. Also, wash the grindstone thoroughly with water without using detergent and dry it in the shade. If it is not dried, it may cause mold to grow.

Sharpness after sharpening

When I cut the paper out of the box, it got caught in the fibers and did not cut well. However, after sharpening, you will be able to cut the paper with the spa, so if possible, it is recommended that you purchase a whetstone together and sharpen the blade before taking it out.

I bought a sheath knife for the first time, but as with many knife reviews, outdoor knives only show their true value when sharpened.

APEC full tongue knife is easy to use and recommended

Until now, I’ve only used folding knives that are easy to use for fishing and small cooking. However, at the camp I visited last week, I realized the need for a sturdy sheath knife. I bought a sheath knife for the first time and told you how to use the APECTY full tongue knife by actually batoning at home and scraping firewood. I hope it will be helpful for those who are wondering about buying a knife!
