Handmade cutlery. Empty can spoon

Handmade cutlery. Empty can spoon, Shieldon

A black spoon shaped like a tadpole. It’s made from an empty coffee can—any size from large to small. The rustic cutlery, which uses the handmade texture, gives you a mysterious view of Southeast Asia when you bring it to your mouth. Would you like to make a magic spoon? Without further ado, let’s start making Custom Outdoor Gear.

(Upper right) A board of about 15 x 15 cm is 2 cm thick. Any wood can be used, but soft ones such as chestnuts are easier to cut and are better. (Lower right) Steel cans are easy to handle because of the size of canned coffee. Prepare the same number of spoons as you want to make. (Left) A4 size is enough for kraft cardboard.

(Top) Hammer is used when hitting a heated steel can. I chose a small head part so that the shape of the details can be easily adjusted. If not, the standard size is OK. (Middle) Since the file scrapes steel, use a metal file. (Bottom) All-purpose scissors for cutting steel cans. You can get it at the home improvement store.

[How to make]

1. Cut the can

Put all-purpose scissors just below the upper lid and cut it out. Cut vertically, as shown in the photo, and finally cut the bottom. Since only the rectangular part is used, the top lid and bottom are trash cans. Note that it is easy to cut your hand in the cross-section.

2. Make a mold

Draw a spoon pattern on kraft cardboard with a pencil. Draw in the size you want to make, and make the dish-shaped part on which you put things circular as shown on the right. Spread the can of 1 flat, place a spoon pattern on it, and trace it with an oil-based pen.

Carve the board with a chisel (large round sword) to create a table that forms the dish-shaped part of the spoon. It is about 6 cm in diameter and carved into a crater-like circle. After that, use a file (No. 60) to eliminate the unevenness after standing and cutting.

3. Cut the mold and heat it on the stove.

After cutting the mold 2 with universal scissors, heat it on the stove (high heat) for 3 to 5 minutes to burn off the paint on the front side and the coating on the backside. At first, the paint burns, and the flame rises, but it soon subsides. Wear leather gloves and pinch the handle with pliers to prevent burns.

4. Hit with a hammer

When it heats up and turns a little red, place it on the 2nd table and hit it with a hammer. Use the edge of the table to shape it. When the spoon has cooled, heat it again on the stove to soften the steel and then tap it. Repeat this 2-3 times.

5. Shape

Fold the handle part into a valley fold (it can be bent sufficiently by hand without heating). At the same time, as it becomes easier to hold, the strength of the spoon increases, and if it is about 150 to 200g, it will not bend even if scooped.

At the end of the capture, use a file to scrape the edge of the spoon to remove burrs. Not only does it have a good shape, but it also has a rounded cross-section that makes it feel better when using a spoon. If you also file the handle, it won’t hurt when you hold it.

[Finishing device]

It is easy to use an electric drill to make a hole. Lay a board underneath to avoid damaging your deck or floor.

If you make a hole in the spoon’s handle, you can hang it on a carabiner through a light pull. I want to take it outdoors as well as indoors.
