Leatherman was born in Oregon in 1983. Finally, Leatherman has released a completely redesigned model “FREE P4”. The factory sent me one for review, which is a “revolutionary magnetic force structure” where a “whole new spring” brings a “great feel” and “among other things ever made”. It is said to be the most advanced multi-tool.

 

Without worrying about promotional jargon, I challenged my old dream of “one-handed opening action” … and for the first time (with one hand), a shocking level of grace and simplicity. I was able to remove the tool from the grip.

 

The usability is the best

After trying this knife for a few weeks, I’ve come to recognize that the $ 140 Leatherman FREE P4 is an amazing gadget.

 

When I opened this multi-tool with “one hand”, the slogan about magnets quickly fell into my head. It opens and the pliers appear, and then clicks to close and fit. In fact, all tools open and close like that. Both the knife and the saw are locked when they are fully opened. Even a Phillips screwdriver, which has a small side and is a cute ruler, makes a clicking sound when opened.

 

The “great feel” feels too exaggerated, but the simple experience of pulling out a multi-tool with FREE P4 is surprisingly satisfying.

 

Differences from other models

What’s amazing is that the FREE P4 can be used with all tools except pliers with the grip folded. But that was something that early Leatherman couldn’t do.

 

In the original WAVE, all the tools could not be put out unless the grip was turned over and the pliers were opened, so it was often operated with both hands. After that, Leatherman creates a model called “OHT” (one-hand-operable) that can be handled with one hand. This meant that the pliers would slide out of the closed position, allowing other tools to open and close from the outside.

 

Subsequent models, “WAVE +” and “SIGNAL,” have a design that is about halfway between the knife and saw from the outside, and the small tools after opening the pliers.

 

Movement to take out large and small tools

The name “FREE” implies that you have easy access to all 21 tools. The four large tools that open from the outside are a straight-edged knife, a wave-edged knife, a saw, and scissors with a grip that opens with your thumb. Small tools include can openers, awls, and screwdrivers. They can be popped up by pushing the protrusion near the hinge of the grip with your thumb. I understand the designer’s intentions, but the protrusion system can be annoying in another sense.

 

Early Leatherman and pocket knives hooked their nails to pull out the tool. The design of the protrusions is different, but you still need to custom small movements to get the tool out of place.

 

The comfort of the lock mechanism is the highest ever

This isn’t completely intuitive, but all tools lock when fully opened. This is more secure than WAVE +. FREE P4 has a lever that works with the tool to fix the open tool. Slide the lever toward the center to unlock it. However, the lever is a bit exaggerated, and it seems that a small metal knob actually moves when pushed.

 

In any case, I prefer this type to the WAVE + button lock. With WAVE +, you press the button between the knife and the storage area to unlock it, but that’s where you don’t want to put your finger in (the knife blade passes!).

 

With that in mind, FREE P4’s design improvements are pretty handy when using small tools. With FREE P4, the tool pops out when you slide your finger, and you can easily find the tool, insert your fingernail into the hook, and pull it out. What’s more, WAVE + has a small tool with an independent lock that pushes a separate button from the outside of the grip, which took some getting used to. Besides, if you press the wrong release button, you could cut your finger in a hurry … just like I did.

 

Became an indispensable companion

What makes FREE P4 so happy is that it’s easy to use overall, so I wanted to use more multi-tools. It’s kind of weird to explain this, but … even if I had a multi-tool, I gave priority to using a special tool, such as using a Phillips screwdriver if I had one. But FREE P4 now feels hesitant to use less convenient tools.
