In a realm where knives are more than just tools, a charismatic designer by the name of Michael Pretsch emerged.

For the past five years, he delved into the art of knife design, crafting drafts that exuded unparalleled brilliance.

With his own knife business alongside trusted partners, Michael held onto a treasure trove of hand-drawn designs, each possessing an unmatched allure.

Unlike many of his peers, Michael resisted the allure of commercial collaborations, fearing it would compromise his standing within the tight-knit knife community.

However, when Shieldon, the acclaimed brand seeking to establish an EDC empire, approached him, his curiosity sparked.

The concept of building a kingdom that merged everyday carry essentials with the rugged outdoors ignited a fire within his creative soul.

Eager to contribute to Shieldon’s vision, Michael presented them with a hand draft like no other. Behold, the Rain: a mesmerizing front flipper EDC knife, boasting a Wharncliffe blade point and adorned with a captivating denim blue Micarta handle.

With this design, the world of knives would be forever changed, and Shieldon knew they had discovered a true gem in Michael Pretsch.

With the hand draft in hand, the team embarked on a mission to transform it into a tangible reality. The first step: translating the design into a CAD structure. However, little did they know that this endeavor would be far from simple.

The process proved to be a formidable challenge, as the drawing underwent numerous modifications.

Driven by a burning desire to push the boundaries of what EDC could be, they ventured into uncharted territory, seeking to breathe life into an imaginative idea. Alas, their attempts met with failure.

Undeterred by setbacks, the team persisted, learning valuable lessons along the way. Each revision brought them closer to the elusive vision they sought to capture.

Although the journey was arduous, their unwavering determination fueled their quest for innovation.

The Astonishing Evolution of Rain’s Handle Design

As the team emerged from the realm of imagination, they confronted the practicalities of bringing their vision to life.

One crucial aspect that demanded their attention was the knife handle.

Delving into the realm of possibilities, they unearthed a fascinating concept: a contoured plate nestled solely on the edges, leaving the center of the handle scale bare.

With this idea in mind, they embarked on an experimental journey, striving to strike the perfect balance between functionality and aesthetics.

Carefully, they sculpted slight slopes along both edges, while preserving the pristine presence of the plate at the heart of the handle.

This intricate detailing graced not only the show side scale but also the backside scale, creating a symphony of craftsmanship.

Behold, “Rain” — the epitome of their imagination and ingenuity.

Wharncliffe Transformation

Every masterpiece begins with thoughtful considerations. Shieldon team embarked on a journey that started with measuring the handle’s interior space.

Determining the ideal length and depth for the blade became their primary focus.

Guided by their vision, they began by sketching a sheepsfoot blade, laying the foundation for what would later become an extraordinary transformation.

The initial hand draft from the designer presented a slight mismatch in size, but this was merely a challenge awaiting their expertise.

As they ventured into the realm of CAD drawing, they skillfully adjusted the dimensions, breathing life into the envisioned masterpiece.

Blade Testing and Jimping Adjustments

In the initial prototype, they erred on the side of caution, creating jimping that was too small and a pivot that was overly tight.

As they eagerly opened the knife, they were met with an unforeseen challenge. The thumb bore the brunt of painful scratches, leading to swelling after repeated attempts.

Undeterred by setbacks, they embraced the lessons learned. Armed with newfound knowledge, they set out to remedy the situation.

Redesigning the jimping, they paid meticulous attention to every detail, ensuring a seamless user experience.

The Hidden Front Flipper Knife

The front flipper, once concealed within the handle, seamlessly emerges, as if conjured by magic.

This enchanting design not only enhances functionality but also imparts an aura of pure refinement.

Prepare to be captivated by the seamless integration of form and function.

Crafting the Perfect Jimping for the Front Flipper

In this particular case, the jimping follows a precise pattern. It begins with a concave cut of 1.0mm, seamlessly transitioning into a convex shape of 0.7mm.

This meticulously crafted feature extends repeatedly from the end of the blade’s backspine, covering a length of 22mm.

The data provided to the CNC machining must be nothing short of accurate, ensuring that the final component is an exact reflection of our vision.

Only then can we be certain that the completed piece will align precisely with our desires.

Designing the Wharncliffe Blade for Optimal Performance

When it came to crafting the Wharncliffe point blade for Shieldon, the expert team faced a unique challenge.

The blade’s distinct shape required careful consideration to ensure it didn’t encroach upon the interior space of the handle.

After all, the last thing anyone wants is a blade that inconveniently touches the handle when the knife is opened.

To maximize the usable space, Shieldon experts pushed the limits, making the blade as long as possible without compromising functionality.

However, they encountered a potential hurdle—the blade’s extended length risked touching the backspacer.

In their quest for the perfect balance, the team embarked on a journey to find the sweet spot where space and functionality harmoniously coexist.

Innovation of Shieldon’s Nested Liner Lock

This innovation seamlessly combines functionality with fashion, elevating the Shieldon experience to unprecedented heights.

Wharncliffe Point

Diving into the realm of the Wharncliffe blade, one key detail demands our attention: the blade’s degree, precisely measured at 48.6. Yet, it’s time to shift our focus to another intriguing feature—the water milling line gracefully adorning the blade.

Just beneath this artful line lies the belly—an ample space designed for cutting and slicing with ease.

Key Components of the Shieldon Rain: Lightweight Design and Unique Handle Material

The Shieldon Rain incorporates essential components that contribute to its exceptional features.

Firstly, the liners of the knife are skillfully skeletonized, resulting in reduced overall weight. With the strategic placement of five holes, the knife sheds approximately 7-9 grams, which accounts for a significant 10% reduction in weight.

Considering that EDC knives typically range from 50 to 80 grams, this reduction is substantial.

In terms of the handle, Shieldon opted for the distinctive denim blue Micarta material. This color choice is relatively uncommon in the current knife market. There are two reasons behind this selection.

Firstly, denim blue Micarta is a unique and precious material that adds value to the knife without making it overly expensive.

Secondly, the color showcases any dirt or wear accumulated during outdoor use.

By embracing this color, Shieldon aims to establish a fashion-forward realm in the EDC knife industry, in line with the designer’s vision.

Blade Clearance and Functionality

The structure of the Shieldon Rain has been meticulously designed to ensure optimal functionality.

When the knife is closed, you may notice a significant amount of space on the blade. However, this deliberate spacing serves a crucial purpose.

To prevent the Wharncliffe point blade tip from coming into contact with the backspacer when the knife is open, we have maximized the available space.

This thoughtful design element guarantees that the blade can fully extend without any obstruction, allowing for smooth and unhindered operation.

By prioritizing blade clearance, Shieldon has created a knife that excels in functionality and user experience.

Introducing the Shieldon Rain: Versatile Design and Practical Features

The Shieldon Blacksmith Rain can be visually appreciated through its rendering image, showcasing its thoughtful design and practical features.

One notable aspect is the inclusion of an ambidextrous and reversible deep carry stainless steel clip.

This means that regardless of whether you prefer left or right-handed carry, the clip can be easily adjusted to suit your preference.

Furthermore, to ensure a seamless appearance and practicality, a filler tab has been incorporated on the opposite side of the clip placement.

This filler tab, also made of stainless steel, serves the purpose of filling out the pocket clip hole when the clip is attached on the other side.

This innovative feature enhances the overall aesthetics of the knife while providing a convenient solution for users who prefer to switch the clip placement.

With the stainless steel construction of both the clip and filler tab, the Shieldon Rain offers durability and reliability in addition to its versatile design.
