Knife structure
For wood-splitting knives, first choose a straight-shaped knife rather than a foldable one. Folding knives are structurally less durable. Therefore, choose a knife that is straight and can be scabbard.
Blade thickness
Select a blade with a thickness of 3 mm or more. Butting puts a heavy burden on the knife, so if you choose a thin blade, it will break or bend. Opinel knives, which are typical outdoor knives, have a blade thickness of only about 2 mm, so they are not suitable for batoning. Be sure to choose one with a size of 3 mm or more!
Blade length
Select a blade that can secure a length of about 10 cm. For batoning, apply a knife to the tree and hit the remaining part of the blade to break it. Therefore, if the blade is too short, the part to be hit cannot be secured and it will not crack well. Be sure to secure about 10 cm.
Blade material
If you are a beginner or find it difficult to maintain, choose a stainless steel knife. Since the stainless steel material does not rust easily, it does not require maintenance.
Carbon knives are recommended for those who use them frequently or who like to care for their tools. Unlike stainless steel, maintenance is essential, but it has the advantage of being sharp. It’s just for professionals.
Tanto Point: modern tanto points are often advertised as being stronger at the tip for having nearly the whole thickness of the blade present until quite close to the end of the knife. The geometry of the angle under the point gives tanto blades excellent penetration capabilities. For this reason, tanto blades are often found on knives designed for combat or fighting applications, where the user may need to pierce heavy clothing or low-level soft body armor.
3Cr13: It is martensitic stainless steel with good machining performance. After heat treatment (quenching and tempering), it has excellent corrosion resistance, polishing performance, high strength and wear resistance, and is suitable for manufacturing to withstand high loads, high wear resistance, and Plastic molds under the action of corrosive media. After quenching and tempering, the 3Cr13 material with a hardness below HRC30 has better workability and is easy to achieve better surface quality.
