Appreciation of works by master craftsmen | Larry Fagan – Flowers in Water / Tearing Dragon, Shieldon

Flowers in water – plant elements have been widely used in Larry’s works. It is a technique that Larry is quite good at expressing the characteristics of agility through simple lines and high relief.

This style, which originated in the European Art Nouveau period, has vigorous vitality in the art world.

Larry created several large-scale daggers works in this style, each of which is moving.

The blade is crafted from ladder Damascus steel forged by Larry, and ends in a high-relief floral pattern at the waist. The handguard is made of carbon steel, with a special brown surface treatment, which is colorful yet calm.

The neck of the sword is also carved from carbon steel. And use 14K gold spacer transition treatment.

The hilt is made of walrus ivory fossils, and the vivid three-dimensional rolling leaf pattern covers almost all areas of the hilt. The tail iron is made of medium carbon steel, like a budding flower.

The scabbard is made of lizard skin, and the armor adopts the same expression method as the gauntlet and is decorated with Damascus steel parts. The mouth of the scabbard is wrapped with 14K gold to make the overall color richer.

Tear Dragon – the famous “Goblin” series of folding knives, is also an excellent carrier to embody Larry’s artistic accomplishment.

The blade is made of Damascus steel with ladder pattern forged by Larry. The blade is engraved with a large number of high-relief carvings, depicting the shape of a dragon’s wing.

The handle is mainly made of antler crown, and a lot of hand-carving is used to create the torso and head of the dragon. The three large horns on the dragon’s body are very eye-catching. The largest horn is a part of the main antler, and the two smaller horns are carved separately from the small antler parts. There are sharp claws made of stainless steel inside the horns. The rest of the smaller horns are made of fossilized walrus ivory.

The dragon spine is made of five layers of metal gaskets, each layer is equipped with exquisite filing details, and the most central dorsal fin is made of copper.

The fierce and domineering faucet, the fangs made of walrus ivory fossils, the longan made of mammoth tooth fossils, and the dragon tongue made of 14K gold are meticulously crafted. The interlayer in the middle of the faucet is made of stainless steel to carve details such as dragon horns and bone-shaped dragon mouths, further highlighting the magical atmosphere. Many metal carving points are used inside the handle groove, and carved parts made of walrus ivory fossils are also inlaid.

The inside of the handle groove is like the internal structure of a magic dragon, peeping in from the dragon’s mouth, all the details are spared no effort to show.

about the author

Larry is my favorite Western blacksmith master. Not only has he mastered the outstanding techniques in the two fields of forging and carving, but his own artistic accomplishment is also outstanding. It is no exaggeration to say that among ABS knifesmiths, if you only talk about artistic attainments, Larry Ray could be counted in a separate tier.

For decades, Larry has been adhering to the concept of hand-made creations, from Damascus steel to a small screw, he has personally created everything.

Larry never needs a computer to make knives, nor does he have a milling machine or a lathe. In his studio, a bench drill, a band saw, two belt sanders, and a polishing machine are all his electric equipment. In addition, a large number of hand-crafted tools are made by Larry himself.

For many years, Larry has not expanded his studio and deliberately maintained this traditional state, Larry said; “Because of the limitations of the equipment, I have to force myself to use more creative ways to match my own. skills to realize the design, which is also my motivation to custom artistic swords.”

With practical actions, Larry showed us a series of masterpieces of art, from goblins to art folding knives, from hunting knives to boi to short swords, and even harnesses. With wisdom and affection.
