This time, MUJI released a knife under the brand name “Folding Knife”, and it was a Japanese folding knife that also has another name of Japanese Opinel.

The blade of the knife is housed in this silvery metal scabbard in a folded state.
The scabbard is engraved with a characteristic registered trademark name, “Higonokami Sadakoma”.
The characteristic is the part called “Chikiri” that you hold with your thumb.

What is “Found MUJI” Higonokami Knife?
Regarding the Japanese metal series of “Found MUJI”, this “folding knife” was introduced in the pamphlet.
A foldable knife manufactured in Miki City, Hyogo Prefecture, a city of hardware. It is said that knives of the current shape have been manufactured since the 1890s. Since there are few parts and few parts that break, it can be used for a long time.

There was a Higonokami knife series that the EDC brand Logos made in collaboration with Nagao Kanekoma Seisakusho, and I introduced it on my channel a while ago.
I was born in 1979, but I don’t remember using this knife or being around when I was a kid, and I told him that my father, who was born in 1953, always kept it in his pocket. Therefore, it seems to be a very nostalgic knife from the viewpoint of people of that age.

To improve the sharpness, burn the part that will be the blade with a burner at 800 to 850 ° C. After baking, put it in oil and slowly lower the temperature. If the temperature gets too high, it will become too hard and the blade will spill, so the craftsmen will work carefully.

It means that it is made by such a manual process.
The video I introduced earlier also touches on the history of blades in Miki City, Hyogo Prefecture, but it seems that there were many factories that made such Higonokami type knives in the past.
With the passage of time, it has become impossible to carry blades easily, and tools such as cutter knives and cardboard cutters that can be used for light work have been developed so that they can be used more easily and safely. I think that it is only Koma Seisakusho.
Compare specs with other companies’ Higonokami knives
If you are familiar with this Higonokami knife, you can see how much it is, and if you didn’t know it at all, you might be looking at it with a fresh taste, but somehow you know Higonokami. I think many people know that there are various types other than this silver color.
Some people think that cool black is good if the scabbard is black and the price is cheap, but the specifications of the knife itself are completely different.
So, from here, I would like to introduce it while comparing it with other Higonokami knives wholesaled from Amazon etc.

1. “Higonokami Chrome Knife All Steel / Interruption”
First of all, it is the black Higonokami knife newly wholesaled this time.
There are two, but the specifications are slightly different for each.
The pods are the same.
This is not a cool black paint, but a rust-preventive coating called Parker treatment.
When I looked it up, it was a level that had a decent rust preventive effect.
Probably the cost is cheap.
I will put out the blade.
If it is new, this caulking joint is tightened quite strongly, so you cannot easily open it just by pressing the chikiri.
It’s pretty hard.

The blade is wet because it is coated with rust preventive oil.
Wipe it with kitchen paper.
This “all steel” type blade is made entirely of carbon steel.
Can you see that the other “interrupt” type blade has some line on the top?
Actually, the “interrupt” has a three-layer structure, with a hard carbon steel in the middle and sandwiching both sides with soft iron.
Therefore, what looks like a line that “all steel” does not have is the boundary line of the material.
The “interrupt” type is engraved with “main interrupt”.
Which is better, “all steel” or “interruption”, but there are some things that cannot be said depending on the application, but “interruption” is said to be more resistant to cracking and breaking.
I remember telling you before that the type of steel is different for the “all steel” type, but the hard carbon steel in the middle of the “interruption” and the carbon steel for “all steel” are different types. I did.
“All steel” is a steel material that uses industrial carbon steel called S55C and contains about 0.55% carbon.
On the other hand, the hard part in the middle of the “interrupt” is made of SK steel, which is a steel material with a good balance of hardness, sharpness and maintenance, which is also used for household knives.
Therefore, the price of “interrupt” is basically a little higher.
I think there are various tastes, but some people may be satisfied with light work such as cutting cardboard, packaging, and strings, and those who want more sharpness should choose “interruption”.
The caulked part is quite hard at the beginning of use, but it gradually becomes loose as it is used, and at the end it becomes loose enough that the blade collapses when tilted.
In such a case, you can retighten the caulking by putting the round patch of the caulking part down, placing it on a hard object such as a metal plate, and hitting it with a small hammer.
If you do it too hard, it will become quite hard and you will not be able to return it, so I think you should do it while checking the condition.
When using, be sure to hold the metal fitting called Chikiri with your thumb.
There is no locking mechanism attached to common folding knives, so it is dangerous if you do not hold it down.
When it’s new, it’s pretty tight, so I feel like it can be used without holding it down, but it’s getting looser.
If you use it without pressing it, the blade will fall over the finger you are holding with some beat, so be sure to press it down.

2. “MUJI Higonokami Knife”
MUJI’s Higonokami knife, first of all, the sheath part.

This is a nickel-plated pod. The rust prevention effect is higher than the previous Parker treatment, and the grade of the sheath is improved.
It seems that people who actually use it on a regular basis will be less likely to rust due to the transfer of oil from their hands, so I think it is better to use it that way.
* Nickel-plated type Higonokami is sold in large numbers other than MUJI.
Since the blade is engraved with this interrupt, SK steel of the level used for household blades is sandwiched with soft iron.
By the way, this SK steel has a hardness of 58, so I think it has a fairly sharp edge.
* Probably the steel part is SK steel due to interruption, but since the steel material name is not listed on the MUJI wholesales page, some specifications may be different.

The sharpness is like this when it is out of the box, but since the Higonokami knife is made to be easy to sharpen, I think that sharpening will further improve the sharpness.
I think it means that you should use it for a long time while performing maintenance.
It is said that it has been finished to a practical level of sharpness so that it can be used immediately, so it can be used immediately for light work.
Even if you use it in camping, you may not want to cook much.
The scabbard of the MUJI Higonokami knife is also nickel-plated, but since the blade is carbon steel and the scabbard is also iron, water will get into the caulked part, so it is used as a knife for cutting camp ingredients. I think it will rust soon.
If you want to cut ingredients even with Opinel, stainless steel is definitely better.
Ah, but there are people who have black rust processing for Opinel.
I haven’t really thought about it, but is there anyone who does black rust processing even with Higonokami knives?
I don’t know for a moment, but I think that if you use a knife that cuts ingredients for camping as it is, it will easily rust and is not suitable.
If you want to cook, I think the stainless steel type that I will introduce next is better.
3. “Higonokami VG10 Stainless Steel Knife”
This is a “VG10 stainless steel” type Higonokami knife like the one in the logo collaboration I use.
I once introduced Higonokami Knife, which was a collaboration with Logos on YouTube.
I lost the one that collaborated with Logos once, and I liked it, so I thought about buying it again, and after researching various things, I found out that the exact same type that is not a collaboration with Logos can be bought cheaply on Amazon. I bought the exact same thing that wasn’t a collaboration.
It’s made of stainless steel and doesn’t have the logos mark.
I think that the rust resistance is completely different compared to other ones.
VG10 makes a very hard and sharp stainless steel blade.
Since it is made of stainless steel, I don’t think it will rust, it just doesn’t rust easily.
I usually use it for work that gets wet outdoors, so if I open it now, it will rust.
Just because it doesn’t rust easily doesn’t mean it doesn’t rust.
