My treasure modern outdoor gear is a Marttiini knife that my Finnish friend Marti gave me as a Christmas gift from Yllas in Lapland 12 years ago.
I spent two weeks each in Jyväskylä, Finland, where Marti lives, twice in 1993 and 2004. I kayaked every day, went into the sauna, and went on a short trip hike to Lapland. Japanese people, including myself, are familiar with the “Swiss Army knife for traveling” when knives. There are dangers associated with sword knives, but I think it is also crucial for adults to teach children “the convenience and danger” as in Finland. It’s a waste to end this knife for me! So am I retired? When I do, I want to teach my daughter how to use a knife and inherit it.
