Explaining the mechanism, first of all, the approximate size of the pinched object can be seen from the scale on the ruler body side. In the case of the above picture, the slide scale is 0 between 20mm and 21mm, so you can see that the thickness is between 20 and 21mm.

 

To know the thickness in 0.1mm increments, refer to the location of “B” in the photo. This point is the part where the scale on the main body side and the line of the slide scale are completely connected and are in a straight line. The left and right scales are slightly out of alignment. The number on the slide scale is 6 on the connected lines. In other words, it can be seen that the exact thickness is 20.6 mm, which is the sum of this 0.6 mm and the value of “A”, 20. It may be a little confusing, but I’m surprised that even a small ruler can measure the thickness fairly accurately.
