“Buttoning” procedure to chop wood with a knife & teach recommended knives! Let’s baton and enjoy the bonfire at the camp!, Shieldon

This time, I will introduce a technique called batoning that thins firewood with a single knife. It is difficult even for advanced camps to suddenly burn thick firewood when starting a bonfire. You need to burn from thin firewood and gradually increase the fire. Batoning that frequently appears in the program “Shieldon’ factory (produced by Shieldon Broadcasting Network)” that is being broadcast on terrestrial broadcasting.

“Beginning of a bonfire” that requires batoning Let’s make the firewood split with an ax even thinner with a knife!

From the pilot version of “Shieldon’s factory”

In the first place, if you can chop all the wood with just a knife, you don’t need an ax.

Since the ax is heavy and it is difficult to make thin firewood (small pieces), batoning comes into play when you want to break the firewood with the ax into smaller pieces. It is difficult to break thick firewood like a log with a knife alone, and it is possible to break the knife.

A small split is required at the time of ignition at the beginning of a bonfire. If the firepower of the bonfire becomes strong to a certain extent, it will burn even if you put the firewood in the bonfire while it is still thick. Therefore, you don’t have to make so many small splits.

During a bonfire, the momentum of the fire may weaken due to changes in the wind direction, etc., but in such cases it is easier to maintain the firepower by adding a small split.

The advantage of a knife is that it is lighter and easier to carry than an ax, so it is perfect when you want to reduce your luggage.

Straight coniferous trees are recommended for batoning! Avoid breaking things with knots as they are difficult to break

When batoning, it is ideal to use firewood that has been divided into pieces that are thick enough to be grasped with one hand. If you do your best from the end of the thick log, it will not crack, but it is quite difficult, so it is faster to look for other firewood.

Some firewood is not very suitable for batoning. As you can see in the picture above, there are knots.

Knots are hard and difficult to break with a knife, and the blade of the knife is easily damaged, so avoid knots or use straight firewood without knots.

Conifers such as grass and cypress are most suitable for batoning. It’s easy to break along the grain of wood, so you can enjoy it even for the first time without difficulty.

Conifers are flammable and perfect for burning, so if you are a beginner and want to experience butting, it’s a good idea to have them choose as much as possible.

By the way, of course hardwoods can be used, but they are harder and denser than softwoods, so they are a little harder to crack. As shown in the picture above, use one with a straight grain as much as possible.

Teaching the batoning procedure and how to use the knife! Non-slip gloves are also recommended.

Before explaining the details of the batoning procedure, I think it will be easier to understand if you first watch the video. Please see the batoning in the pilot version of “Shieldon’s factory“.

It looks easy, doesn’t it? The video shows the easy-to-break coniferous firewood, so it’s fun to break without the need for force.

Next, I will explain the method in detail with still images and sentences. To prevent injury, we recommend wearing non-slip gloves *. By the way, I use Grip Swanny’s “G-1B” gloves, but if you are buying gloves for the first time, I recommend Kinko’s “Cowhide Gloves 50”, which is cheap and heat resistant. It was

First, raise the firewood and place it on the ground, and then place the area near the center of the knife blade vertically against the firewood. If the tip of the blade is too high, it will be difficult to hit it later. The angle of the knife should be parallel to the ground.

Never place your hand or body in the direction of travel of the knife. Do not support it with your hands or pinch it with your feet just because the firewood is about to fall. It is supported only by the force of pressing with a knife from above.

It is a view from directly above. In the case of hard hardwood, it is easier to break it from the corner to the smaller one.

While holding the knife vertically, hold the firewood in the other hand and hit the back of the knife. Please note that if the knife is slanted, the force will escape and it will not crack well, and the knife will also be damaged.

The blade of the knife bite into the firewood. Keep the angle of the knife and hit it further. In the middle of the back of the blade, the firewood gets in the way and you can’t hit it, so you have to hit the edge of the knife.

Tap the edge of the blade so as not to hit the firewood, and break it all the way down. Keep the hand holding the knife lightly toward the ground so that the knife stays level.

Repeat until it breaks to the bottom. If you hit the blade to the ground, the blade may hit the stone and spill. Use a chopping table or stop just before hitting the ground and tear by hand.

Even if you feel that the blade is caught on the way, do not twist the wrist and twist the angle of the blade. The blade will be ruined. The blade can only be advanced directly below.

If the blade just doesn’t move, kick open the firewood with your foot and pull out the knife. If it is cracked halfway, break it with your hand or foot, or if it wasn’t there, split it from another place.

Conifers do not require any force and can be cracked, so it is fun and tends to make smaller splits than necessary. Basically, it is enough only at the time of ignition, so it is enough to make a few pieces of firewood finely.

Introducing the recommended knife for batoning! If the blade thickness is 3 mm or more, it is strong and easy to use.

From “Shieldon’s factory”, Mr. Ogi’s vivid color Mora knife.

Since the back of the knife blade is hit, the blade is also required to have a certain level of strength. I want a blade thickness of 3 mm or more. If you use a folding knife, the metal fittings on the folding part will be overloaded, so be sure to use a non-folding sheath knife.

Cuchillo Mora Companion Heavy Duty MG

The perfect knife for the first one is the Mora Knife Companion Heavy Duty. A knife made in Sweden, a great country of bushcraft, with a sufficient blade thickness of 3.2 mm, and the blade length is neither too small nor too large.

There are two types: stainless steel, which does not easily rust the blade, and carbon, which has a slightly sharper edge. If it’s for batoning, you can choose either one. Choose stainless steel for those who want to simplify maintenance, and carbon for those who want to sharpen and sharpen.

Even if the price is cheap, it can be used more than enough, so many campers have this. I also use it.

I think that a cheap and generous knife like a Mora knife is better for batoning than a high-end knife that costs tens of hundreds of dollars.

A knife whose blade steel is extended and integrated up to the handle is called a full tongue knife, and it has high strength and is ideal for batoning.

Full tongue knives vary in price from cheap to expensive, so I would like to introduce the products that I was really happy to use.

Condor / Tool & Knife Bushcraft Basic 5inch 1075 Carbon Walnut CONDOR Bushcraft [Genuine Japan]

It is a product called Bushcraft Basic Knife of Condor. A full tongue knife that can be wholesaled for less than $100 and has sufficient sharpness.

It is easy to use for shaving purposes other than batoning, and it has a good cost performance even if it is not as good as a Mora knife, and it is a knife that can be used generously.

The handle shape is straighter and more slippery than the Mora knife, so you need to be careful not to let your fingers slip towards the blade.

Aim for bonfire master with batoning! Let’s get a recommended knife. It’s cool to be able to casually do it!

Not only at the time of ignition, but also when the firepower of the bonfire drops, you can quickly make small pieces of firewood with a knife and control the firepower freely. It’s really cool!

Needless to say, knives are dangerous because they are blades, but because they do not swing around, they can be broken relatively safely than an ax, which is also a good point of batoning. Why don’t you try it with your child?
